Topic Thursday // Hearing Voices - functioning day to day // CLOSED

Re: Topic Thursday // Hearing Voices - functioning day to day // *IN SESSION*

No, they are not voices of any person I can recall meeting, they are predominately male, rather ordinary voices, the only time that the startle me is one strong male voice who will out of the blue sy something completely random like "let's paint it blue.." when I've had nothing at all to do with painting or decorating - it's not even Freudian.....

Hi @Former-Member
My thinking can become very busy at times and I can have full on arguments in my head but I've never thought of this as anything other than my own thoughts.
My external voices are quite different and are often very strident and extremely derogatory as well as demanding obedience. This is what I find quite terrifying and the repetitiveness of their demands seems to reverberate around me so I feel as if there is no escape from them.

Thanks for sharing @Kurra

That sounds like you have some really great tool in place. I think its great that you have a colleague who is open and willing to support you. This makes me happy!!!

Someone mentioned to me they often listen to 'white noise' at night, not actually the radio and this really helps for them.

@sjmilne Thanks for sharing!

That is a really fascinating statement. Have you thought about getting out some blue paint and a paintbrush and doing it?

Has anyone experienced any other types of hallucinations they want to share? How have they made you feel?

Re: Topic Thursday // Hearing Voices - functioning day to day // *IN SESSION*

Thanks for explaining @Kurra, it must be so exhausting? do you ever have silence? If so whats that like?

Re: Topic Thursday // Hearing Voices - functioning day to day // *IN SESSION*

Hopefully things are turning around  @leitor. The carers program will be a great place for you to learn all the things you and your wife are eligible for.

Unfortunately if you don't know what to ask for, sometimes you slip through the crack. We still have a long way to go in terms of supporting everyone in our community.

But you have found us here at SANE, and you are connecting with a carers program, so you are on the right steps.

Yes @Former-Member I do have periods without hearing voices. They only seem to appear when my mood swings are extreme.

Sometimes people that experience voices, have trouble sleeping at night. We all know poor sleep does nothing good for our mental health. Ive got some tips that may help you to get to sleep and stay asleep.

  • Avoid alcohol, coffee and nicotine for 6 hours before bedtime
  • Have only a light meal at dinner time
  • Don't exercise before you go to bed, but exercise in the morning or the middle of the day
  • Only use your bedroom to sleep - don't watch tv
  • Don't force yourself to sleep if your not tired
  • Have a bath before bed
  • Tell your voices its bedtime and you now want quiet.

What are some tools you use to get to sleep?
