Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

Oh I love this post @rav3n ! Whilst I have never been a big music person, I have definitely noticed how music interacts with my mood and sleep!

This might be a long answer - people please feel free not to read if you dont care for my anecdotes! 😅

I used to use music to help me fall asleep. However, I stopped doing that when I got my car license because I found that on monotonous car drives (I had a 1hr highway drive to work back then) I would start to feel drowsy because I had music on in the car. 🤭 so then I started to read before bed to wind down to sleep, but then I did university and found that I started falling asleep reading textbooks because of that pattern too. 🤭 now I listen to podcasts which keep my brain engaged mental until I drift off.

Back to music and mood. I enjoy rock and metal music (but not thrash), and used to listen to some as a teen, but found that many of the lyrics (which is very important to me in a song) were very depressing and negatively affected my mood and encouraged my negative thinking about the world. So I decided to change to listen only to christian rock and metal - as they tend to have some form of a positive messaging or hope in their song lyrics even if it might be a bit of a sad or angry song.

I do find the slower metalcore ballards are good for when I feel sad or lonely. The more upbeat heavier ones are good when I feel angry and help me move to a calmer less angry mood through expressing energies. And then there is occasionally some funnier or more 'popish' rocks songs mixed in by the artists which are good if I need to stay awake driving or doing exercise.

I also find music helps me focus at work when working on mundane work (like document editing), or to help tune out other background noise in the office (like others talking).

I do like the sound of the rain.

But most other "relaxation music" would irk me and not be enjoyable lol. But so would a range of other types of music like Rap and Hip Hop. 😅 and a lot of Pop music.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@rav3n   I’ve always got the radio on in the car, quite often it’s just background noise.

I have an eclectic taste in music genre with cds to match.

when feeling really low and miserable my go to is songs from war times or military bands.

song that helps me at various times by Lauren Daigle

Song that first comes to my mind that makes my smile I had played at my late husbands funeral by Birds of Tokyo

music when I’m needing to concentrate is Human Nature

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

i love reading anecdotes hehe thank you for sharing!! @AlwaysMyself omg the falling asleep 😆 so good that you switched to podcasts when you needed to be more alert!

i use music to tune things out too or as background music during tasks - i procrastinate (a lot) so having a familiar song sometimes helps me feel less overwhelmed by the task in hand.

i love pop and hip/hop rap music 😆 but i wouldn't call them 'relaxing' either haha (and i don't like some of the rap lyrics themes).
do you ever listen to the same song on repeat for a while? sometimes i'll go through phases where i repeat the same song again and again without feeling sick of it.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@MedicinalGypsy oh wow, that sounds really interesting (and bonus that it's free for the 10 days!)

i can imagine how powerful breathwork and movement can be in healing/connecting the mind and body. look forward to hearing you experience

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@Former-Member yesss i have heard 'you say' before, she has an amazing voice!!

the lyrics are so beautiful for both those songs, appreciate you sharing

it's so lovely when a song holds special memories for us and brings a smile to our face.

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

I would very rarely put a single song on repeat @rav3n , but maybe listen to a song a second time if it feels "very right" at the time. 🙂

I'm currently trying to prepare a mock presentation for a  job interview (the presentation is a mock, not the interview lol) and I felt so unmotivated to do it (just want to rest or comfort eat or zone out), so I've put on some music to help me focus. 🙂

(And using checking forum notification as break times of course lol 🤭)

@MedicinalGypsy that sounds like a great festival event. 🙂 im glad you went and found it really helpful

Re: Wind-down Wednesdays

@AlwaysMyself that's so fair! my sister's like that too, so when we drive together i give her control of the playlist so that my song repetitions don't drive her mad 😅

ooo may i ask what the job interview is for? that's been me with some applications i need to get done, i've just been zoning out... but i'm going to try do same as you tonight and push through.
