A big welcome to the Sane forums from me. I noticed yesterday that this was your first post. Though you subsequently posted the same info to the Intro thread. I was very happy to see you received some wonderful responses from other members there.
In brief, yes I have been through a very intense series of CBT and Exposure Therapy. Initially 3 times a week for up to 3 hours duration each session. After a few weeks it was reduced to only one 3hr session weekly, but maintaining daily phone contact with my clinical psychologist. And homework to do in between.
Yes it was incredibly difficult and very triggering work. The reason my psych insisted I check in at least daily with her during this time, was because I did the therapy when my hubby was away, and I had no support. I do believe that the work I did with that was beneficial overall. It took the edge off, if you know what I mean? It also equipped me with self help techniques such as .. Safe place, breathing techniques, learning to work through panic situations, etc.
I also did a block of EMDR therapy a couple of years later. I think the previous trauma therapies prepared me fairly well for that. My clinical psych specialises in trauma work and is an authorised and competent EMDR technician. I believe it took away some of the highly emotional aspects related to my traumatic experiences. So yes, I think it was an overall helpful therapy for me.
The most important thing for me in all my trauma work, is that I had already established a very good relationship with my psych. I trusted her and she knew me well. If that was not the case, I very much doubt that I could have got through it.
I wont go into further detail now, as I know you got some really helpful advice about Emdr on the intro thread yesterday.
If or when you open a thread of your own, please tag me, because I would welcome the opportunity to compare notes.
Sherry 😀

Hi @Faith-and-Hope @Maxi7 yes there is a recent conversation about EMDR here : EMDR - Has anyone done this Most of the stuff about EMDR is in the first few pages, since then it's changed to a more general discussion. I suggest typing EMDR into the search bar as there have been several chats about it over the last year or two.
Great to hear that overall it helped you too @Former-Member Yes I agree, having an established good relationship with the psychologist who does it probably makes a big difference to how well it works.
